Who is Randy Glasbergen?

Randy Glasbergen (born 1957) is an American cartoonist and humorous illustrator best known for the daily comic The Better Half.

You may recognize cartoons that look like this… Randy is their creator:

Thinkling Inc. is TI and Randy Glasbergen is RG in the interview below.

We thank Randy G. once again for the generously immediate reply to our email.

TI. You officially started as a cartoonist when you were 14 years old. If there’s one thing that has changed in you from then to now, what is it?

RG. Biggest change—-I grew up! I’m a grandfather now and have a lifetime of experiences to write and draw about. And of course, the business is changing rapidly as we shift from print to electronic publishing. 20 years ago, a typical customer would be a magazine like Good Housekeeping paying $300 for a single cartoon. And now, a typical customer is more apt to be a small business buying 10 cartoons @ $35 each for a newsletter or blog. There are many more opportunities now, but the customer base is much different.

TI. What is your most memorable cartoon character you’ve drawn?

RG. I draw different characters every day for my freelance work. I have recurring characters in “The Better Half”. Which character is the most memorable…..I forget.

TI. Your style of cartooning has a “balloon” effect to the nose of your cartoon characters. Is this inspired from any particular cartoonist / person?

RG. When I got started Broom Hilda and Hagar were both new strips and I was influenced by them, mainly the art. New Yorker cartoonist Henry Martin was a big influence on my gag writing. Best advice I ever got was from Gahan Wilson who told me, “Do something no one else does…” and that also influenced my style, inspiring me to not follow the crowd and try to draw like someone else.

TI. There would be an approximate 30-40 cartoons you make in a week and you don’t publish all of them, do you post them all on your website?

RG. Eleven cartoons per week are used for “The Better Half” daily and Sunday, 1 is for “Thin Lines”, 7 go on my website and the rest are submitted to various publications that use my work (Reader’s Digest, Playboy, Medical Economics, etc.)

TI. What are your pet guinea pigs’ names?

RG. Gummo and Zeppo, named after the forgotten Marx Brothers.

TI. If you were to join a cartooning press, would you take up the 9 to 5 job instead of freelancing?

RG. I enjoy freelancing and earn more working for myself than I could make working for someone else. Of course, there have been lean times and good times and things fluctuate from year to year.

TI. What, in your terms, has been your biggest achievement?

RG. Staying in business for 35 years, being able to support a family doing what I love. Still accomplishing new things, career still growing…my satisfaction doesn’t come from one big achievement but many smaller achievements. I really enjoy the variety and surprises that come with a freelance career.

TI. You usually get this a lot – what is your advice to budding cartoonists?

RG. Just DO it. Do something each day to bring you closer to your goals. Stop talking about it and start doing it. Stop making excuses and DO it. Write, draw, submit…over and over, year after year, decade after decade…that’s how you build a career.

TI. Do you always ink your cartoons or do you opt to start on the PC from scratch as you wish?

RG. I draw with pencil on quality typing bond typing paper, then ink with Flair pens. Later I scan into my Mac for coloring, web, archiving, etc.

TI. Do you plan on an animated film version of your cartoons or do you prefer they stay catchy one-liners?

RG. If someone wants to animate my work, that would be terrific. I’m always open to new opportunities. I licensed some of my cartoons for a corporate animation project not long ago, but I haven’t seen the finished product yet.
